Lake Biviere di Lentini is the largest artificial basin in Europe. The whole area is a naturalistic oasis of considerable importance, an ideal habitat for a multitude of plants, birds and fish.
Lake Lentini was built between the 12th and 13th centuries by blocking the course of the Trigona river. Since its swampy nature was a harbinger of malaria, in 1923 it was drained and reclaimed. In the 1970s it was rebuilt, smaller but deeper, as a water reservoir for agricultural and industrial use, and to deal with the water emergency in the area.
The reservoir represents an excellent habitat for resting and feeding a large number of birds. About 25,000 birds, belonging to 150 different species, transiting through this area have been estimated. In its waters, in fact, there are various species of fish that represent an excellent food for birds. Many migratory birds usually nest here, storks are certainly the most spectacular element of the lake's nesting avifauna. Another species present in the area, with very high numbers, is the cormorant, a large fishing bird: it is assumed that there are about four thousand cormorants in the lake capable of devouring about a ton of fish a day.
The naturalistic area does not it has equipped areas.
The origin of the lake of Lentini is linked to the myth of Hercules and Ceres.
