Necropolis of San Martino in Pantalica
The Necropolis of San Martino is among the most interesting of the necropolises in the archaeological area of Pantalica.
It is made up of prehistoric tholos tombs and Byzantine catacombs: the Hypogeum of Dionysius and the Grotta di Sant'Anna.
The Hypogeum of Dionysius dates back to the 4th - 5th century AD. and at the entrance there is an inscription that reads: "Dionisio who served as a presbyter in the Erghitan Church for 34 years sleeps eternal sleep here".
The Grotta di Sant'Anna probably dates back to 11th-13th century it has frescoes on some walls in which the figures of Santa Maria, San Pietro and Sant'Anastasia can be partially recognized. In both necropolises there are canopied tombs.
The Necropolis of San Martino is located near the town of Ferla, before the entrance to the Pantalica reserve.
