Cave of Cordari in Syracuse
The Grotta dei Cordari, located inside the Latomia del Paradiso in the Neapolis Archaeological Park, is so called because some artisans worked hemp in this place and produced ropes of all kinds, favored by natural humidity.
The cave is very large, the vault is still supported by pillars left by the stone quarrymen, and huge squared blocks can be seen hanging from the ceiling like colossal stalactites.
Another peculiarity of the cave is the bottom covered with meteoric waters or groundwater that come from infiltrations of the vault.
Other caves present in the Latomia del Paradiso are the Ear of Dionysius and the Grotta del Salnitro .
