Montalto Palace in Syracuse
The Palazzo Mergulense Montalto , located in the ancient Spirduta district, on the island of Ortigia , represents one of the most successful examples of clear mountain Gothic . < br> It was built by the will of the noble Macciotta Mergulense in 1397. In the 15th century the palace was donated by Queen Costanza of Aragon to the Montalto family. In 1837 it was arranged as a lazaret following cholera and later welcomed the religious community of the Daughters of Charity.
The building is characterized by a medieval façade, with well-carved dark stones, characteristic of the fourteenth-century architecture of Syracuse. The facade has an ogival door and three large pointed arched windows, decorated with geometric and floral motifs. It is also enriched by a beautiful aedicule decorated with modillions, below which you can see a large stylized "M" and the dedication in Latin to Maciotta Mergulense.
