The Citadel of Vendicari
The Citadel is a Byzantine village from the 6th century AD used for centuries by Phoenicians and Greeks in their trade.
In this archaeological area the catacombs of the old necropolis are currently visible. Their position testifies to the enlargement of the village which seems to have incorporated one of the two necropolises making it monuments of the village itself.
On this site you can admire La Trigona: a Byzantine cuba, which, like all the churches of the time, is a Greek cross with a square plan, with an upper dome and three apses, one of which with a large opening to the east to allow the light of the full moon to enter and thus begin, as tradition at the beginning of Easter.
