Mother Church in Castelmola
The Mother Church of San Nicola di Bari in Castelmola was built in 1934 on the pre-existing Mother Church presumably dating back to the 1500s. The new building has different architectural styles, from Romanesque to Gothic, from Arab to Norman.
The main entrance is on the side of the square and overlooks a viewpoint from which you can admire the majestic Etna, the splendid Gulf of Naxos and the Ionian coast in the direction of Catania. On the main façade there is a large rose window and a finely worked portal. The bell tower is located on the right side and set back from the facade. Internally, the Church consists of a single rectangular nave beyond the circular apse area. Near the entrance stands the choir where an imposing decorated wooden organ is still functioning, the bellows of which are still operated manually by wooden levers. In the Church there is a wooden statue of the Magdalene and a statue of the Madonna del Rosario, notable the pulpit in inlaid walnut wood dating back to the 18th century.
