Gate of Saracens in Castelmola
The Porta dei Saraceni marks the extreme limit of the ancient Myle, the first settlement of the city of Castelmola, and therefore constitutes another gateway to the village.
The gate connects the village of Castelmola to the Piano delle Ficare road which leads to the nearby necropolis of Cocolunazzo and subsequently to Taormina.
The ancient local stone architecture rests upstream on the rocky wall at the foot of Mount Mola and downstream towards a natural cliff. In this way, the structure represented an impregnable passage and is considered the only monument that withstood the siege of the Moors.
