Basilica of Madonna della Catena in Castiglione di Sicilia
The Basilica of the Madonna di Catena in Castiglione di Sicilia is the most important of the religious buildings in the village.
Its construction began in 1655, following a landslide that destroyed the old church located just outside the village along the San Giacomo stream. But it was only starting from 1612, following the miraculous sweat of the statue that the devotion to the Madonna della Catena was consolidated. Its small construction was, between the end of the seventeenth century and the middle of the next, enlarged and embellished with a monumental Baroque facade. Around 1860 the only nave of the church was transformed into a Latin cross and crowned by a large and imposing dome, while at the beginning of the century the plan was again modified and enlarged, taking on the current shape of a Greek cross.
