Nike in Giardini Naxos
The Nike of Giardini Naxos is a sculpture, located on the seafront, which recalls the link between the foundation of the city of Naxos and the two Greek cities of Chalcis Euboea and the island of Naxos, homeland of the members of the expedition .
The Nike, the work of the sculptor Carmelo Mendola, was erected to commemorate the twinning of 27 November 1965 between Giardini Naxos and Calcide Eubea. The statue was placed in the extreme point of Capo Schisò with its gaze turned towards the sea to indicate the way that led the ships of the first settlers of Naxos. This sculpture is inspired by the Nike of Samothrace preserved in the Louvre Museum in Paris and depicts the messenger goddess of victory. A second copy of the statue was placed in 1980 in Chalcis Euboea.
