Calvary Church in Savoca

Eugenio Nicola Scarcella - CC1.0

TheCalvario Church of Savoca stands on the Calvario hill, in a splendid panoramic position from which you can admire Etna, the town of Savoca and the Ionian Coast. The church is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of the Seven Sorrows and the Holy Cross.
It was built in the 18th century on the ruins of a hermitage where some Basilian monks from the abbey of Church of Saints Peter and Paul of Agrò in Casalvecchio Siculo.
In 1735, the Jesuit monks built the stations of the Via Crucis there. This ancient church, over the centuries, has always been linked to the rites of Holy Week and even today, every year, Holy Week performances take place here.
In front of the church there is a large and valuable arch of stone, which is believed to come from an ancient structure.
