Church of Jesuit College in Alcamo
The Church of the Jesuit College of Alcamo , also known as Chiesa del Gesù , dominates Piazza Ciullo.
The construction of the Church of the Gesù was begun in 1684 and finished in 1767, the design of the grandiose building was carried out by the architect of the Jesuit order, P. Dazio Agliata.
The facade has an orderly architectural score of pilasters and cornices and where five niches containing the statues of Sant 'Ignazio di Loyola, San Francesco Xavier, the Madonna dei Miracoli and, below, the archangels Raphael and Michael. Two cuspidated bell towers and a sinuous crowning complete the façade.
The church, with a single nave with a large transept surmounted by a barrel vault, has walls and apse decorated with eighteenth-century polychrome stuccoes.
Among the works preserved. inside the church, noteworthy are: a painted canvas by the painter Giuseppe Renda, entitled "The Circumcision of Jesus"; and a holy water stoup from 1500 in white alabaster.
Annexed to the church are the premises of the former convent , now restored and home to the Museum of Contemporary Art of Alcamo .
