It was established on January 2, 1876 and houses art objects pertaining to the suppressed Corporations, archaeological finds belonging to the Hernandez collections, coins initially from the Cordici collection and later in the possession of the Coppola family and works of art from churches and monasteries.
The museum also has an archaeological section with finds from the Erice area.
A room entirely dedicated to temporary exhibitions was created in the same premises.
