Tapestry Museum in Marsala
The Museo degli Arazzi di Marsala is a museum of the curia which exhibits a series of Flemish tapestries from the 16th century, and is located in the immediate vicinity of the Mother Church of Marsala.
Inside the Museo degli Tapestries are exhibited eight Flemish tapestries in wool and silk, of very high artistic-historical value. The tapestries were donated in 1589 to the Mother Church of Marsala by the Marsala Archbishop Lombardo of Messina, former archpriest of Marsala. It is said that, between 1550 and 1560, Mons. Lombardo was sent to the court by the bishop of Mazara of Spain to obtain exemption from certain taxes. The bishop not only succeeded in his intent, but also obtained the appointment as court chaplain and became confessor to the queen of Spain. It is said that the tapestries were donated to the Lombard bishop by the Queen herself at the time of her investiture in Messina.
