Tonnara of San Vito Lo Capo
The Tonnara del Secco is one of the symbolic places of the entire territory of San Vito Lo Capo . It is located three kilometers from the city center, on the western tip of the Gulf of Castellammare.
Unfortunately, little remains of the ancient tonnana, dating back to 1411, and definitively abandoned in 1965, but its charm is still intact.
Next the remains of ancient fish processing plants can still be admired today at the properties of the tonnara. The tanks were made of cocciopesto with a drainage channel for the discharge of the waters from the sea processing. The nets were lowered a few meters from the shore to catch the big tuna that in spring crossed the waters of the Gulf of Castellammare in their race for reproduction.
Suggestive and fascinating place used numerous times as a location for famous films including including Kefalonia, Viola di Mare and in some episodes of the "Commissario Montalbano".
