Parco di Segesta
Things to do, attractions, interesting facts
State: TP - Area: Trapani surroundings
The Archaeological Park of Segesta stands on the site of the most important Elymian city of Sicily.
Legend has it that Segesta was founded by the survivors of the Trojan War led by Aeneas, who, before arriving in Rome, left a large colony there of his fellow citizens, including his old father. Segesta soon became a powerful city which therefore had an almost always conflictual relationship with the other powerful city, Selinunte.
The most significant buildings in Segesta are the theater, the temple and the sanctuary of the Mango district, which represent the centers of worship, representations and politics.
Relevant to the medieval phase of the occupation of the area are, in addition to the reconstruction of the surrounding walls with the Porta di Valle, the medieval castle of Calatabarbaro annexed to the theater, the Church of San Leone and the mosque.
Recent excavations have revealed cave dwellings dating back at least to the end of the 6th century BC.
