Fountain of Saturn in Trapani
The Fontana di Saturno di Trapani , located in the homonymous square, was the first fountain in the city, whose function was to distribute drinking water to its inhabitants, which came from the foot of the mountain and was conveyed up here from an aqueduct.
It was built in 1342 by the noble Chiaramonte family. In the 18th century the Baroque decoration and the marble statue of Saturn were added to embellish it.
The fountain evokes the legend according to which Trapani was founded by Saturn. In ancient times the god Saturn was in fact considered the protector of Trapani.
