Polyphemus Cave in Valderice
Polifemo Cave in Valderice, located on the northern slope of Mount Erice, in the Emiliana district, is a cave of archaeological interest.
The entire area is characterized by the presence of numerous caves and shelters frequented in the Paleolithic age as evidenced by some fragments found. The caves present in Contrada Emiliana are: the cave of San Francesco, the cave of the Maltese and the cave of Polifemo.
In particular, in the cave of Polifemo a rock painting has been identified which depicts an ellipsoidal meandering figure with parallel lines and concentric.
Particularly evocative is the spectacle that can be enjoyed at sunset, on the day of the summer solstice: the sun, setting with its rays the cave of Polyphemus offers a highly suggestive play of lights.
