The purceddu d'Alcamo melon is characterized by having a green, ribbed and wrinkled skin and an oval shape. The name "purceddu", a Sicilian term to indicate the "pig", recalls its rounded shape. It is a rustic variety, which is kept for a long time and which must be grown strictly in dry conditions.
