White Plum of Monreale
Agricultural Product
The White Plum of Monreale is a native variety present only in the territory of Monreale, cultivated in a promiscuous and traditional way. The White Plums of Monreale are represented by two varieties: Sanacore and Ariddo di Core.
The Sanacore plum has a very aromatic fruit and has a typical varietal flavor. It is believed that the name is related to the fact that the fruit is so tasty that it causes a pleasure that reaches the heart. Popular belief also attributes to it medicinal powers for heart diseases. The Ariddo di Core plum is very sweet and fragrant, small in size, with a yellowish-white skin. In the past the plums were wrapped by female hands in sheets of tissue paper, forming "salamini" with about ten fruits, tightly closed and tied. In this way, hanging in the cool, the fruits, while shriveling, kept their flavor and aroma intact until Christmas. It is believed that the name derives from the fact that this fruit was a tribute to the Goddess Core, Proserpina, whose return to earth, following the abduction by Pluto, marked the arrival of spring.
