Syracusan terracotta is the result of an ancient tradition and stands out in the rich panorama of similar island productions for the originality of the shapes. In the Syracuse area there are the most famous ceramic workshops where it is still possible to find the best of the production of traditional Syracusan ceramics.
Among the most characteristic artifacts of Syracusan terracotta we find: the 'whistle of Syracuse', usually depicting the image of Saint Lucia, patron saint of the capital; terracotta figurines; decorated plates and bowls; 'bummoli' in Syracusan terracotta, that is characteristic containers for water which, thanks to their shape and a particular construction technique, have a good insulating capacity and were therefore used to keep liquids fresh for a long time.
