Church of Itria in Caltabellotta
The Church of Itria in Caltabellotta is located in the heart of the historic center.
It is believed that the first installation of the building dates back to the end of the sixteenth century. The church was originally dedicated to the Souls in Purgatory, as can be seen from the figures carved on the stone medallion placed on the front.
The facade, enclosed between two imposing pilasters, has a cusped profile that stands out in the small open space in front. The portal with four twisted columns supporting as many Corinthian capitals on which rests an architrave surmounted by two spirals and a medallion with the images of a soul in purgatory and a seraph in the center is valuable. There is a finely carved wooden door, the work of the local carvers Girolamo Campo and Giuseppe Nicolosi.
The interior, with a single nave, is enriched by valuable stuccoes made by the craftsman Bernardo Sesta who in 1885 during their construction lost the life, following a fall from the scaffolding, and was buried inside the crypt of the church.
Among the works kept in the church of particular value are the circular canvas paintings placed on the apse and on the vault depicting the apostles .
