Cammarata Castle
The Cammarata Castle is an ancient manor house that testifies to the rich historical heritage of this village. The fortress, over the centuries, has suffered numerous injuries and collapses and today the central tower is the best preserved part.
The date of construction of the castle is not known but it is believed that it was Lucia de Kamerata em>, the first governor of the country, to order its construction around the year 1100. Count Roger, in fact, given the vastness of his territories, had the need to decentralize power: he donated some of his lands to soldiers and relatives, Cammarata was taken over by her relative Lucia.
The castle was originally equipped with imposing walls that enclosed the entire town and the surrounding forest, so that the inhabitants could collect wood and stock it up. The tower of the castle, the best preserved part which today hosts cultural and artistic events, was once the prison of the castle: food was dropped down the stairs in increasingly smaller quantities, causing the prisoners to die slowly.
