Church of San Vito Martire in Cammarata
The Church of San Vito Martire in Cammarata is one of the most important churches in the area.
It was built at the beginning of the 16th century and in a document from 1541 the building is described as a small non-sacramental monument with only altars of San Vito, San Calogero, San Filippo, San Rocco, of the Holy Virgin. of the Shelter and the SS. Crucifix of the Angels.
The building is accessed by a monumental stone staircase. The façade, in stone, is divided into two orders by a string course and punctuated by pilaster strips, also in stone. The building is flanked by an imposing bell tower.
The interior, with three naves, has a basilica layout in Renaissance style.
Inside the church is the statue of San Vito b>, located in the central nave and surmounted by the eye of God among clouds and symbolic figures; in this chapel there is an eighteenth-century wooden choir with carved eagles, while in the walls of the same chapel there are four sculptures representing the martyrdom of the saint.
In the side naves several altars and canvases of great artistic value: the canvas Death of the Madonna, by an anonymous artist from the 17th century; the Crucifix of the Angels, a sixteenth-century wooden sculpture; the custody of the SS. Sacrament in a chapel adorned with stuccos and paintings by Carmelo De Simone from the early twentieth century; the statue of the Madonna del Riparo.
