State: AG - Area: Agrigento surroundings
Canicattì is located on the border between the provinces of Agrigento and Caltanissetta, in the upper valley of the Naro river, surrounded by low hills.
There is little information about the origins of the village, the first historical sources date back to the year 1061, a time in which a farmhouse already existed under the name of Canicattì. In 1467 Andrea De Crescenzio obtained the licentia populandi to be able to expand the boundaries of the fiefdom. An important moment of development, from which the cultural life of the city came to life, occurred in the 17th century, when the princes James I and, subsequently, James II, established free fairs and founded convents and monasteries. The economic growth that the city experienced in the following century, linked both to the resourcefulness of the rich local families and to the strategic position occupied by Canicattì within commercial traffic, left an important trace in the religious, civil and public buildings of the city .
