Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Naro

The Church of Carmelo in Naro is an ancient place of worship in the village.
The church and the adjoining convent were built on the site of a pre-existing place of worship dedicated to San Pietro, at the end of the 15th century. The complex stands near the Porta Annunziata, in what was once a strategic passage point and an excellent point for controlling the surrounding countryside. Over the centuries, the complex was the subject of various renovations and expansions.
The simple gabled façade has a single decorative element: the stone portal dating back to 1612. The bell tower was rebuilt at the beginning of the 19th century.
The interior, with a single nave with side chapels and niches in the perimeter walls, has late 16th-century influences.
Among the works kept in the church, of particular value: the wooden statue of the Prophet Saint Elias by Nicolò Bagnasco; the canvas of San Domenico in glory, by Domenico Provenzani; the wardrobes sculpted by Francesco Vaccaro da Naro and Rocco Cardellicchia, kept in the sacristy; a 17th-century wrought iron door and an 18th-century gilded wooden throne, also located in the sacristy.
