Mother Church in San Biagio Platani
The Mother Church of San Biagio Platani, dedicated to the Patron Saint San Biagio, is the main building of worship in the city. It stands in the heart of the village, at the crossroads between the two main arteries, between Corso Umberto I and Viale della Vittoria, of which the church forms the scenic backdrop.
It was built in 1635, when the town was founded. The original structure consisted of a single nave but, over the centuries, the building has undergone numerous alterations and expansions. In particular, in 1952 the nineteenth-century façade was demolished and the current façade was raised.
The salient façade, in stone, is divided into two orders by a string course frame and punctuated horizontally by two orders of pilasters. The central door opens on the first level, located at a higher level than the street level, and reachable via a staircase. On the second level, on the right side, the bell tower with clock rises.
The interior, with three naves, houses works of particular artistic value by Padre Fedele da S.Biagio, an eighteenth-century painter and scholar: the Miracle of San Biagio, the Martyrdom of San Fedele da Sigmaringa, the Annunciation, Samson and Dalila, the Delivery of the keys of Jesus to Peter, some ovals taken from the mysteries of the Rosary and the seven sorrows of the Madonna.
