Capo San Marco Nature Reserve
The Riserva di Capo San Marco in Sciacca is a protected area characterized by the alternation of a series of beautiful beaches, coves and cliffs, some reachable only on foot or by boat. the seabed of Capo San Marco , recognized among the sites of community interest, due to the presence of some coastal shoals rich in Posidonia oceanica and as a refuge for numerous animal and plant species. The naturalistic importance of the area is also linked to the presence of the largest bivalve in the Mediterranean, the Pinna nobilis, a protected species threatened with disappearance due to fishing and the reduction of habitats.
The lands overlooking the beach of very fine sand are , in many cases, covered with spontaneous vegetation where juniper, dwarf palm and mastic are the most important essences. This beach is also one of the few places chosen by the caretta caretta sea turtles for laying their eggs.
There are several beaches along this coastal area, starting from the mouth of the Carboj river we find: lido dello Stazzone , characterized by a sandy shore and a sea full of rocks; Lido della Tonnara and della Foggia , where the seabed is sandstone; Lido di Capo San Marco which includes beaches, coves and cliffs, often reachable only on foot. These areas, for the beauty of the seabed, are recommended for snorkelers.
