Village of Santa Caterina
The Borgo di Santa Caterina, in the municipality of Acireale, formerly called "dei Cavallari", is made up of narrow alleys embellished with flowers and citrus trees.
The village stands on one of the most high of the Timpa, its birth is around the seventeenth century and the church dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria in Egypt dates back to the eighteenth century.
In the past its position was used as a lookout point, today, thanks to it, from the Belvedere square it is possible to grasp the beauty of the Calabrian and Taormina coast. The impressive panorama is then enriched by the sheer drop on the sea of the Acese reserve. From here you can admire the underlying beach reachable by a path near the church of the Belvedere.
The path, surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation, leads to the source of the Acqua del Ferro. The small beach is characterized by rocks with a particular reddish color, given by the ferrous content of the spring water. In the imagination of the Acese population this reddish color recalls the blood of the shepherd boy Aci in love with the nymph Galatea.
