Bishop's Palace in Acireale
The Bishop's Palace in Acireale together with the Cathedral, the ecclesiastical buildings with their internal courtyards, combined with the Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul, constitute a true religious citadel.
The palace was built in the 18th century. In 1872, following the appointment of the first bishop of Acireale, Monsignor Gerlando Maria Genuardi, the bishop's palace was joined to the Cathedral via an overpass known as the bishop's arch.
The building that stands it rises on two floors, the second houses the episcopal apartments and the chapel. In this chapel there is a small secret window, commissioned by Monsignor Pasquale Bacile, seventh bishop of Acireale from 1964 to 1979, which opens directly onto the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament of the Cathedral.
