Solicchiata Castle of Adrano
The Castello Solicchiata, located in the district of the same name a few kilometers from Adrano, represents the first Bordeaux blend in Italy vinified with the French method. Owned by Felice Spitaleri di Muglia, Marquis of Sant’Elia and Baron of Solicchiata, it was built around 1855. Baron Spitaleri wanted to build a rural building on Etna in the district, between 800 and 1,000 meters high. The Castle became the most important industry for the production of wine, the so-called Vino Solicchiata.
The beauty of the castle lies in its composition. A manor built entirely of Etna lava stone, in a medieval style complete with a moat and a drawbridge. The reason why these two elements were built lies in the possibility of making and keeping the basements dry, where the historic cellars are located.
