Church of Carmine in Giarre
The Church of Carmine in Giarre, also known as the Church of San Francesco, is a building of worship in the Renaissance-Ravenna style.
The church is located in the Ponte district, so called because the road, at the height of the current Church of Carmine, was interrupted by a stream and a small bridge ensured pedestrian passage.
It was built starting in 1857 at the behest of the inhabitants of the neighborhood led by Don Rosario Grasso and dedicated to the Madonna del Carmelo. It was completed in 1912 with the construction of the bell tower and the installation of the mechanical clock.
The façade is divided into two orders by a stringcourse. On the first level, punctuated by columns with Corinthian capitals, there are three portals surmounted by lunette windows; The larger central trabeated portal is framed by two pairs of columns that support the entablature and a slightly overhanging tympanum. On the second level rises, in a central position, the single-light bell tower surmounted by a clock, flanked by two balustrades.
