Church of the Santissimo Ritrovato in Giarre
The Church of the Santissimo Ritrovato in Giarre is a place of worship in the hamlet of San Giovanni Montebello. Its name is linked to the episode of theft and subsequent discovery of the monstrance from the Church of San Francesco Borgia in Catania at the end of the eighteenth century.
It was built at the behest of the Pedarese baron Domenico Papardo in his estate between 1821 and 1825, in the place where there was a statue in memory of the stolen hosts.
The façade has a trabeated portal surmounted by a window with a round arch. Two pilaster strips delimit the façade laterally and support the string course frame surmounted by a belfry.
The interior, with an orthogonal plan, houses valuable works: two paintings by Giuseppe Zacco depicting the Crucifixion and the Annunciation; a painting depicting Saint Anthony of Padua by Paolo Ferlito kept in the sacristy; an engraving depicting the discovery of the Blessed Sacrament, a work by Antonio Zacco, also kept in the sacristy.
