Riposto

State: CT - Area: Catania and Etna

Riposto is located on the Ionian Sea and has the large and modern tourist port Marina di Riposto, also known as Port of Etna for its suggestive and strategic position.
The history of the town of Riposto is closely connected to that of the County of Mascali, of which Riposto was the commercial port. Originally the site, as it was subject to raids by pirates and Muslim corsairs, was populated only seasonally for commercial and military reasons. Only at the end of the seventeenth century did the first fishermen's houses arise which gave rise to the first stable settlement along the coast. In the 18th century, a powerful Venetian family, the Pasini, settled in Acireale, built their country residence in an area that became the second nucleus of ancient Riposto, called Scariceḍḍu, and transformed the surrounding territory which was still barren and wooded into vineyards and orchards. After the abolition of feudalism, the city of Giarre, which at the time included that of Riposto, obtained the decree of separation from Mascali. Autonomy from the city of Giarre was instead achieved by Riposto with the decree of 17 April 1841.
