Calvary Church in Sant'Alfio
The Church of Calvario in Sant'Alfio is a small place of worship that stands on a hill from which you can enjoy a splendid panorama.
It was built between 1878 and 1885 by the will of the priest Domenico Caltabiano with the purpose of celebrating Good Friday celebrations in this place. Subsequently, devotion to the Madonna of Lourdes was also introduced into the church, which was joined by a large group of faithful. The growing number of faithful made it necessary to enlarge the church and build a sacristy.
Today the church is easily accessible from the state road but originally it was accessed via a shortcut with ramps, known as scalazza em> or Calvary Staircase.
The façade is characterized by the chromatic contrast between the pink and yellow of the plaster.
During the last restoration, traces of a wall painting dating back to the early 1900s depicting the crucifixion of Jesus were found in the apse under a superficial plastering.
Good Friday celebrations take place in this church and the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes was officiated in the month of February.
