Church of Misericordia in Trecastagni
The Church of Santa Maria della Misericordia in Trecastagni is the oldest sacred building in the town. The church is also known as the Church of the Whites (or Church of the White) as it is the seat of the brotherhood of Mercy whose followers wore white.
The date of construction of the church is not known but it is certain that it already existed in the fourteenth century as the date 1302 is engraved on the main bell. It was rebuilt and enlarged in the 15th century and destroyed by the earthquake of 1693. The current structure dates back to 1734.
The façade divided into three parts by pilasters is closed by a double-pitched roof. Of notable value is the monumental, finely crafted portal in lava stone and the window above, coming from the ancient church destroyed by the earthquake. The building is flanked by a bell tower which is not homogeneous with the rest of the building in terms of shape and materials used.
