Carmelo Church in Alimena
The Church of Carmelo in Alimena is a valuable building of worship located along the main street of the town and flanked by civilian homes. Dedicated to the Madonna del Carmelo, it was born as an oratory of the Confraternity of the same name established in 1831 and was opened to the worship of the faithful on 4 August 1849.
The façade, characterized by the rectilinear upper termination, is surmounted by a small bell tower with two arches pointed arch which houses two bells, flanked by two volutes. At the center of the facade is the portal, with valuable inlays, surmounted by a mullioned window with pointed arches.
The interior, with a single nave, has a vault decorated with stucco work of fine workmanship.
Among the works kept inside the church: a small, well-made choir; the Statue of the Madonna del Carmelo which, according to tradition, was donated by a believer from Caltavuturo and which was carried on the shoulders during the night to prevent the citizens of Caltavuturo from noticing it; a canvas of the Madonna del Carmelo from 1700, located in the sacristy, where the confraternity of the Madonna del Carmelo has its headquarters.
