Church of San Giovanni Battista in Gangi
The Church of San Giovanni Battista in Gangi is an ancient religious building that belonged to the order of the Knights of Malta and subsequently became the private chapel of Mocciaro Place.
The date of construction of the original building is not known, but it is known that in 1580, the commandery of the Jerusalem Order of the Knights of Malta owned in Gangi, in addition to the Magione fief, a vineyard in the Terrati fief and two houses, a hospital, of which today no trace remains, and a church under the title of San Giovanni Battista, identified with today's Church of San Giovanni Battista. No trace remains of its original appearance since, in the second half of the nineteenth century when it became the private chapel of the rich feudal family, the church was heavily remodelled.
The building was incorporated into the residence of the Mocciaro family and is located at one of the two ends.
The façade has a lowered arch portal flanked by two pairs of partially overlapping pilaster strips that support the architrave, bearing the date 1883, and a triangular pediment. The portal is surmounted by a small rose window. To crown the facade, which ends with a balcony connected to the building, there is a small bell tower positioned on the side.
