Church of San Giuseppe in Gangi
The Church of San Giuseppe in Gangi is a small building of worship in the village. The church is popularly known as the Church of San Giuseppe dei Poor, to distinguish it from the Church of San Giuseppe dei Ricchi, a church which houses a statue of Saint Joseph but which is actually dedicated to Saint Paul.
It is believed that in this same where a sacred aedicule originally stood and that in the 17th century, when the neighborhood began to take shape, a chapel with a single altar was built, always dedicated to the same Saint. In the second half of the eighteenth century, the sacred building was enlarged to take on its current shape and a vast rectangular square was created in front of the church. An important restoration project dates back to 1902, the year in which the portal of the church was built.
The interior, with a Greek cross plan, houses the valuable wooden statue of Saint Joseph holding the Baby Jesus in his arms, a work attributed by F. Alaimo to Quattrocchi, and by Farinella to the style of Girolamo Bagnasco, placed on the main altar; The statue is placed inside a niche, around which an artistic Baroque-style portal was created, made of marble of various types and colours, of great elegance. On the sides we find the two altars dedicated to the Madonna dell'Aiuto and San Giovanni Bosco.
