Church of the Holy Souls in Valledolmo
The Church of the Holy Souls in Valledolmo is an important building of worship.
It was built in the 16th century by Baron Antonio Cicala, at the time of the foundation of the first town, and was dedicated to the Madonna del Buon Pensiero whose statuette , after having been venerated for over a century on the main altar, is today kept in the sacristy. The church is an extension of the ancient feudal farm.
Originally the church stood on a flight of steps which gave the building a certain grandeur. Following the construction of the provincial road in 1892, the staircase was removed and some steps were created inside the building.
The gabled façade, in Roman Corinthian composite style, has a single side-by-side portal by pilasters that support the entablature, surmounted by a circular window. Above a string course there are three lights with round arches with goose breast railings. To crown the façade, on the left side, rises the belfry: inside there is a bronze bell with the name of the knight Antonio Cicala, founder of the church, carved into it.
The interior, with a single nave, houses the mausoleums of the Duchess of Catalonia Anna Summaniata, first wife of Count Giuseppe Mario Cutelli, and of Count Antonio Cutelli.
