The cult of Demeter in Gangi
In fact, every year the Sagra della Spiga is held, a festival which commemorates the passage of the goddess Demeter through these lands.
It is said in fact that Demeter, goddess of the earth and fields, wandered desperately searching for his daughter Persephone (the rape of Persephone). During her search she arrived in the city of Engyon, ancient Gangi, where she was lovingly welcomed before resuming her journey towards the Etna volcano. The goddess thanked the inhabitants of Engyon for their warm hospitality by giving them an ear of wheat, a symbol of abundance.
