The Game of Majorchino obtain UNESCO recognition

The Gioco del Maiorchino, a tournament that has been organized in Novara di Sicilia for over 400 years, has obtained a UNESCO recognition.
The news came at the end of the seventeenth Committee of the UNESCO Convention held in Rabat from 28 November to 3 December 2022.
The Majorchino Game is a test of skill which consists in rotating, with ropes, Majorcan cheese wheels for about a kilometre. Throwing requires strength, experience and speed. Each team is made up of three players and the one who crosses the finish line first using the least number of throws wins.
The game, dating back to the first half of the seventeenth century, was once also widespread in some centers of the Nebrodi and of the Peloritans.
Every year in Novara di Sicilia the Torneo del Maiorchino, whose finals take place on Shrove Tuesday.
