The cataletto of Santa Lucia del Mela is a carnival rite whose origins date back to the last decades of the sixteenth century.
The cataletto provides for the setting up of a very special procession that accompanies Carnival until its death, symbol of the end of the party and the beginning of Lent.
The main moments of this representation are:< br> The sposalizio, a grotesque mock marriage between a woman who takes the role of a groom and a man who takes the role of the bride, characterized by a script of jokes and fun.
The < strong>trial in Carnival, which, traditionally, was accused of gluttony and gluttony, so much so that he died with a fraviola in his mouth, with judges, a doctor and a priest ready for the grotesque funeral.
The symbolic death of Carnival who, after eating and drinking excessively, is accompanied in a fake funeral procession by the general clamor and crying of the cianci morti, or the classic mourners. The puppet is burned on a crackling pyre, as a symbol of the end of the festival and the beginning of Lent which is marked by the sound of the bells, the campanazzu.
