Legend of Castelluccio
The legend of Castelluccio, handed down by the Lithuanian writer Karl Grass, tells of a treasure to which the future of Sicily is inextricably linked.
It is said that in a distant time, on a hill, known today by the name of Monte Castelluccio, the sultan of Constantinople prophesied that Sicily would remain poor until the treasure of this mountain, where once stood a city and an imperial palace , it will not be dug up.
It was thus that over the centuries people of all backgrounds and ages attempted to search for this elusive treasure.
It is said that, many years ago, some young people went to the mountain in search of of the treasure and that, after digging for a long time, they saw a large quantity of gold in a cavity. One of the young people decided to enter that cavity but suddenly the earth began to close in on him; the man was frightened, invoked the protection of all the Saints and only in this way was his life saved. However, the treasure disappeared under the mass of earth and has never been found since.
