Legend of the Fresh Fish of Licodia Eubea
It is said that under the castle of Licodia Eubea ancient underground passages allowed the inhabitants to leave the city walls without any difficulty.
Under the Santapau castle there are more than 1400 meters of tunnels, hypogea that seem to be ancient aqueducts used in the following centuries, during the early Christian period, as catacombs and burial grounds.
According to the legend this intriguing network of underground tunnels was such as to allow to the inhabitants of the castle to go out undisturbed from the walls, buy what they needed and return without any difficulty. Just to demonstrate their strength, the legend tells that the lords of the castle, when they were besieged, offered the invaders fresh fish.
