There are several hypotheses about the origin of the toponym - Aidone -
The most suggestive hypothesis links the origin of the toponym Aidone to the legend of the Rape of Proserpina. It is believed that the term Aidone derives from the Greek Ἀιδωνεύς (Aidōneús), that is, the god Hades, the god of the underworld. According to legend, in fact, Hades, after having kidnapped Persephone near Lake Pergusa, stopped on the hill of Aidone.
The other two hypotheses maintain that the toponym derives from the ancient Greek ἀηδών (aēdṓn), nightingale or is an anthroponym of Germanic origin Aido-onis.
