Origin of the name - Calamigna -

origine-nome-calamigna

Calamigna is the name of the ancient fiefdom that stands in the place where Ventimiglia di Sicilia is located today, the name with which the local population still calls the village.
There are various hypotheses regarding the origin of the toponym Calamigna.
The most accredited hypothesis asserts that the ancient settlement was called moenia, in Latin mura , and then became migna, to forget the fortified walls that surrounded the site; and that later, with the arrival of the Arabs, the prefix Qal'ah was added, from which Cala, i.e. fortified fortress.< br>A second hypothesis instead derives the name of Calamigna from the Greek term kalamos, i.e. cane, and from the Latin calaminius made of reeds, a less reliable hypothesis because agronomists maintain that the territory of Ventimiglia is not suitable for the cultivation of canes.
