Origin of the name "Castellana Sicula"
The name "Castellana Sicula" derives from the ancient family of Castellana di Spagna.
Castellana di Spagna was the house of the wife of the Duke of Ferrandina who named the place on which the village was built around 1700 after his bride. The first houses developed around a castle-shaped dwelling known today as Casina Rossi and were inhabited by farmers who chose these lands for the abundance of water sources. The first settlement in the plain consisted of the three fiefdoms of Castellana, Fana and Maimone, and the districts of Calcarelli, Frazzucchi, Ospizio, Sciocca and Sciafè.
