The Liberty Style in Canicattini Bagni
Canicattini Bagni preserves a rich architectural and artistic heritage in Liberty style.
The first Art Nouveau buildings of some artistic interest appeared at the beginning of the nineteenth century, but only after the First World War Canicattini Bagni experienced a great urban development thanks to the many emigrants to the United States who returned to their native country.
Among the various stonemason artists of Canicattini Bagni, the name of Santo Aiello stands out, who achieved well-deserved fame even outside the local context. Among the most significant works of this artist we remember the façade of the church of Purgatory and those of the buildings located in:
- via Regina Elena n.37, 73, 90, 107;
- via Vittorio Emanuele n. 251, 328; - via Principessa Jolanda n.134 and 177;
- via Umberto n.222; - via Dante Alighieri n. 42;
- via S. Pellico 81;
Another very talented stonemason was Sebastiano Bonaiuto. Among his most significant works we remember the decorations of the façades of the noble chapels of the cemetery, of the Maria Ausiliatrice Church and of the Villa Comunale; the baptismal font of the Mother Church and the elevations of the buildings located in:
- via Vittorio Emanuele n.152, 264 and 98;
- via Umberto n. 118 and 120;
- via XX Settembre n. 36.
