In mid-nineteenth-century Catania, in via crociferi and in many other places, the scenes of Story of a blackcap were shot.
The movie, directed by Franco Zeffirelli and based on the novel by Giovanni Verga, tells the story of Maria Vizzini, starring Angela Bettis, a young novice who, together with her fellow believers, has to leave the convent due to the cholera epidemic. She thus returns home to her father and stepmother. It is a period in which, between walks and conviviality, he gets to know the world beyond the convent and meets Nino, a charming and cultured young man with whom he falls in love. Forced to return to the convent, in the final scene the novices prepare for their definitive vocation.
The film was shot in Aci Trezza, Aci Castello, Catania, on Etna, in Palazzolo Acreide, Noto, Zafferana Etnea and in Aci San Filippo.
Several scenes of the film were shot in Catania: the Jesuit college is the place from which the novices leave to go with their families because of cholera; the Arch of San Benedetto is the arch where Maria and Nino take their leave; The marriage between Nino and Giuditta is set in the Church of San Benedetto; the cloister of the convent is the courtyard of the University Palace. Many scenes are set around the Etna area.
