Church Santa Maria degli Angeli in Caltanissetta
The Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Caltanissetta is an ancient building of worship, perhaps built in the eleventh century, and consecrated in the year 1100.
It is located near the remains of the equally ancient Pietrarossa Castle, and for a long time at one time it was used by the Swabians as a private chapel, thus also acquiring the functions of the second city parish, in terms of history and importance.
Characterized, like other buildings in the area, by an elegant Norman style, the original structure of the church has now almost disappeared , having been used in numerous different ways.
Inside the building there is nothing left, one can only observe the plan, typically Norman, which consists of a single nave. In addition, some precious decorative elements can be found on the outside, often ruined by overbuilding and by inappropriate restorations carried out.
The main western door is worthy of particular attention, due to the particular friezes that adorn it: built in stone sandstone, has a pointed arch in three levels, supported by four cylindrical columns with capitals.
